Background: Maryland Citizens Against State Executions (MD CASE) is a coalition of groups and individuals united to end the death penalty in Maryland. We are a 501(c)3 tax-exempt charitable organization. MD CASE is currently a lead organization in an intensive, statewide campaign to repeal capital punishment in our state.

Desired Skills and Qualifications:

The ideal candidate is a strong and clear writer with natural instincts and experience in organizing, who is also savvy with social media, committed to progressive issues and grassroots social change, possesses excellent verbal communication skills, and has the flexibility and temperament to work in a fast-paced, constantly changing political environment. Needs agility to assess developments and information amidst fast-moving campaign and quickly craft fresh and persuasive campaign messages that motivate citizen involvement and action.

Responsibilities:

The Communications Organizer is responsible for timely implementation of communication and organizing tasks and activities, reporting to and otherwise performing related duties assigned by the Executive Director.

  • Create (from drafting to final copy) mailings, newsletters, grassroots action tools, event promotions, and other printed materials.

  • Generate and manage timely updates of website, social media content, electronic mailings and action alerts.

  • Coordinate and promote MD CASE events, house parties, etc.

  • Promote MD CASE and urge citizen action for repeal by tabling at churches, community events, or other outreach opportunities.

  • Assist the Executive Director in drafting and editing of funding proposals and reports as needed.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Plan and coordinate with all repeal campaign staff from MD CASE and partner organizations on overall campaign activities.

  • Attend staff meetings and participate in organization-wide planning.

  • Work with the Business & Office Manager to recruit, train and nurture volunteers to assist in mailings, phonebanking, events, other campaign activities

  • Develop positive relationships with MD CASE Board members, donors and volunteers.

  • Monitor and help update the campaign plan and give regular reports on progress on assigned campaign tasks and activities.

  • Recruit religious congregations, unions, community groups, etc. to support the repeal campaign.

  • Provide staff support to the Executive Director in her work and other key volunteer groups, including preparing agendas, materials, meeting notes, etc. as requested. Attend staff meetings and participate in organization- wide planning.

  • Assist as needed, with the overall maintenance of the organization and its offices.

  • Professionally and positively represent MD CASE and its commitment to abolition so to generate goodwill among campaign partners, current and potential MD CASE constituents and the public.

Overall Campaign Program

The Communications Organizer does outreach, public education and otherwise builds the following of MD CASE and the intensive campaign now underway for repeal of the death penalty. Implements MD CASE and repeal campaign strategies involving outreach, event publicity, website and social media growth and maintenance, and constituent contact through email, postal mail and phone. Demonstrates familiarity with and commitment to death penalty abolition. Personal enthusiasm and a confident, professional presentation.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Excellent written communication skills, with ability to craft concise yet persuasive campaign messages for written communications;

  • Political campaign experience in support of an issue, initiative, or candidate campaign;

  • Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills;

  • Goal-orientation and willingness to hold self accountable;

  • Attention to detail;

  • Commitment to accuracy;

  • Willingness to relocate to Maryland, if necessary, work out of MD CASE’s office in Mt. Rainier;

  • Willingness and ability to travel in-state and to work some evenings and weekends;

  • Ability to work cooperatively and to manage multiple concurrent assignments while under pressure to meet deadlines;

  • Ability to work well with coalitions and the staff and leadership of allied organizations;

  • Energetic outlook and commitment to our progressive mission and grassroots approach to change;

  • A team orientation that combines collegiality and creativity to drive and motivate others.

Qualifications:

  •  
    • Demonstrated ability in written word and presentation.

    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education or equivalent work experience.

    • Highly self-motivated and self-critical and a strong work ethic.

    • Work experience in a campaign or similar non-profit advocacy preferred.

    • Previous organizing or communications experience strongly preferred.
