Dear Governor O'Malley, I just thanked Governor John Kitzhaber for halting executions in Oregon, a stand he took because - very much like you - he has concluded the death penalty is an "unworkable system that fails to meet basic standards of justice."

I wanted to take a minute to thank you too because I believe your groundbreaking leadership on this issue has created the political space for another governor to do the right thing! I am very hopeful that 2012 will be the year that we repeal Maryland's death penalty. Momentum is on our side, in no small part because of all you have done. I am 100% behind you, and I look forward to you leading us to victory next year.
